Mondavi’s To Kalon hardly needs an introduction. Perched in a prime location in Oakville, it’s one of the best vineyards to grow Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. For decades, this bottling has been a pillar of prime Napa Cabernet, and this vintage shows why.

Glorious, as usual, with not one but two fresh 97-point scores, and surely more to come. This 2022 delivers big time, and if you can stash a few for a couple of years, you’ll be rewarded. Drink it now, after some serious breathing time, if you’d like, or age it for decades. There’s never a wrong time. We won’t bore you with pedantic tasting notes - it’s hard to capture this wine fully, anyway, the pros pretty much nailed it. All we’ll add is that it’s dense, structured, opulent, and flat-out sexy!

97 Points – Decanter “Exudes classic Cabernet character, with blackberry fruit, graphite and a hint of new cedar on the nose. The full-bodied palate is defined by precise, fine-grained tannins and a polished structure. The quality and depth are exceptional, delivering a quintessential Mondavi Reserve. Though approachable now, the tannin structure is still quite pronounced, so waiting is advised. The blend contains 7% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged for 21 months in 100% new French oak. Winemaker Kurtis Ogasawara emphasizes that they sought Cabernet Sauvignon with true age worthy quality in 2022. Drink 2027-2042.”

97 Points – James Sucking “So supple, rich and relaxed at first sip, then firming up nicely on the palate to reveal good aging potential. Layered with oak spices, blackcurrants, black cherries, cedar, cinnamon, and dark chocolate. Quite substantial yet fine-grained tannins boost the structure, along with good acidity and a pH of 3.67, which is rather crisp for Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley. Drinkable now, but best from 2030.”
